Henry David Lee set up the HD Lee Mercantile Co in Kansas, 1889 specialising in the production of denim dungarees, overalls and railroad jackets. In 1924 Lee released the 101B Cowboy jeans, the first denim trouser specifically designed for cowboys and rodeo riders.
Historically, this 101B is one of the later models replicating the iconic fit from 1946 cut primarily with the cowboy in mind. These have wider set back pockets give riding comfort and the wide cut straight leg tapers down at the hem and cut from14oz Selvedge Denim woven in Japan using American Cotton. The jeans themselves are made in Italy
Lee was usually the choice of denim amongst many iconic figures including James Dean, Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe.
A pair of Lee 101B jeans worn on-screen in Giant by Dean sold at Heritage Auctions in October 2006 for $35,850.
