Neta Snook Southern Flying Coat, Battered Seal HH, 40"/42", S#4754 - £1000

Item Sold

Aside from being arguably one of the World’s greatest female aviators Neta Snook Southern undoubtedly had the best piece of flying kit of them all. Over the years Aero has seen, handled, restored many early flying coats, we’ve and even built a few ourselves but Neta’s coat, an oversized (on her) Man’s coat, is, in our opinion, the finest piece of design of the genre ever.

Although it's unlikely we'll ever make another, It’s been a real pleasure replicating this unique coat that she wore throughout her flying career . Our experience in handling originals going back over many decades enabled us to have a very educated guess at how the interion would have been designed, from the tie strap to keep the coat in place during use to the unique storm cuffs fitted to these early coats.

Most of these coats used construction techniques brought over to USA from Europe, this one is no different, it yes uses these methods better than any we’ve ever come across.

It’s fitting that such a unique coat belonged to such a unique person

In a short but spectacular and groundbreaking career starting in her teens before retiring in her mid 20s, she set the standard for every Aviatrix to follow. Just out of High School Neta began by purchasing a wrecked Canadian Canuck, had it shipped back to Iowa, and spent two years rebuilding the aircraft in her parents' backyard. In 1920, Snook soloed in her rebuilt Canuck, flying from a nearby pasture and received her pilot's license. After a brief spell “Barnstorming" she set up her own Flying School and teaching Amelia Earhart to fly.

Construced in Battered Seal Horsehide with a heavy duty Grey Army Blanket Lining, period style storm cuffs and fitted with Genuine Vintage 1920s Leather Football Buttons.

Cut to fit over flying gear, please judge the actual size by these measurements, we'd estimate between a Size 40" and a 42"

Pit to Pit: 24"

Sleeve: 25.25"

Back: 39"
