Shetland Wool Jumpers

At Aero Leathers, we knit many of our sweaters and jumpers using heavy duty Shetland wool from the native Shetland sheep of the Shetland Islands. We have chosen this wool as it best replicates the wool used in the sweaters worn by hardy sailors in the harsh conditions of wartime conflict.

Many of the jumpers featured in our Shetland wool sweater collection below have been faithfully recreated using original archive 1940s patterns - you can't get more authentic designs than that!

Why Is Shetland Wool a Great Material for Jumpers?

Shetland wool is great for jumpers for the following reasons...

  • Exceptional Warmth: The yarn of Shetland wool naturally traps air, offering significant warmth without being heavy or stifling. This makes Shetland wool sweaters ideal for layering on cold days!

  • Durability: Shetland wool has a robust fibre that is designed to last for years and get better with age (just like our leather jackets!).

  • Lightweight: Shetland wool can be spun thinly without compromising strength, creating a garment that is hard-wearing but lightweight.

  • Water Resistance: The natural oils and structure of Shetland wool offer some inherent water repellency.
