Wearing a leather jacket in summer

When you think of styling a leather jacket, you probably think of layering warm winter clothes like knitted jumpers and scarves – but how about during the summertime? Is it possible to wear a leather jacket in the warmer months without melting as soon as you step outside?

The answer is yes! With the right approach and styling, you can rock a leather jacket all year long. Here are some tips to help you perfect your summer look…

1) Choose the right type of jacket.

When selecting a leather jacket for summer wear, it’s important to choose the right style and materials if you want to feel as cool as you look. Jackets made from less thick and more breathable leathers – like goatskin, for example – tend to be better suited to warmer weather as they are softer and more lightweight than heavier horsehide and steerhide jackets.

Suede jackets are also a great choice for summer since suede tends to be lighter and more breathable than traditional leather. Plus, suede has a casual, textured feel that pairs well with laid-back summer outfits. Our 1950s College Jacket, for example, is a great choice of summer jacket.

2) Try a different colour.

Traditional leather jacket colours like black and brown absorb quite a lot of heat, so if you’re shopping for a summer leather jacket, try a lighter and more neutral shade like Natural, Navy or Russet.

Lighter colours reflect more sunlight, helping to keep you cooler – plus a lighter colour will probably go better with your summer outfits anyway.

3) Pick the rest of your outfit wisely!

If you want to pull off a leather jacket in summer without overheating, what you wear with the jacket is just as important as the jacket itself. Try to pair your leather jacket with light, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen. A simple white T-shirt or tank top under a leather jacket is always a good look and should keep you cool, calm and collected even on hot summer days.

If you’re a fan of the layered jacket look, don’t let the weather stop you! You can layer light button-ups, polos and tanks to achieve the layered look without the extra warmth.

So can you wear a leather jacket in summer? Yes, but you may need a few adjustments! By choosing lighter materials and styles, and pairing your jacket with summer-friendly fabrics, you can wear your leather jacket all year round.
