Suede has been a popular fashion material since the late 18th century, when Swedish artisans made soft leather gloves known as 'gants de Suède' (gloves of Sweden) from the underside of animal hides. This is where suede got its name. Due to its pliable, soft texture, suede is commonly used for shoes, handbags, furniture...and of course, suede jackets!

In this blog post, we'll look at where suede comes from, how it compares to other types of leather, and what kind of suede jackets we stock here at Aero Clothing.

How Is Suede Made?

Suede is made from the flesh side of an animal hide, usually that of a lamb or goat. When the hide is processed, it is split into layers: the inner, fuzzier layer is used to make suede, while the outer layer is used for smooth leather. The thick hides of cows and deer are also sometimes sueded, but due to the fibre content these tend to have a shaggier nap.

The underside of the skin is sanded and buffed to create the soft and fibrous finish that suede is known for. The process is usually completed with tanning and other finishing steps to stabilise the material and prepare it for use.

Suede vs Leather

Suede has a soft, velvety texture due to its napped surface, whereas other leathers tend to have a glossier appearance and a more rigid feel. In comparison to your average leather, suede is less durable and more susceptible to damage as it lacks a protective outer grain layer. However, suede is soft, thin and pliable, making it an ideal material for clothing and delicate uses.

When it comes to jackets, both suede and leather are a fashionable choice. If you're looking for a jacket that is durable and rugged, you may want to opt for a standard leather jacket; if you're looking for a softer, more delicate jacket that is great for more casual occasions, try suede. Suede jackets also usually come in more neutral, tan and brown tones in comparison to traditional leather jacket, which tend to come in deep black hues.

Here at Aero, we offer a range of jackets that come in quality suede. Our 1950s College Jacket and Majestic are two classic designs that are made from double-faced goat suede. We also offer our version of the classic Type III Jean Jacket in unlined cow suede – this can be paired with a classic white tee and Levi 501s for the perfect autumnal look!
